Awareness and Prevention of Lyme disease

How does a pet contract Lyme disease?

Any warm-blood species can contract lyme disease.  Certain tick species carry and transmit bacteria that cause lyme disease.  For a tick to transmit the disease they first must be an infected carrier.  Most ticks hide in low-growing vegetation and wait to jump on to their host.  When attached for 48 hours they can transmit the disease through a blood bath.

What to watch for if you’re pet is infected:

Most common signs are loss of appetite, painful or swollen joints and lethargy.  Typically pets that are infected will not show signs for 2-5 months post infection.   Lyme disease affects each pet differently, and many don’t display symptoms at all.

How to protect your pet against lyme disease?

        Lyme vaccine

Topical that repels and kills flea, ticks, mosquitoes and biting flies.

Brush your pet frequently during tick season

If you find a tick on your pet remove it promptly with a tweezers.  Try not to crush the body. Dispose of the tick immediately.
